I was in the store last night, spending about 5 minutes trying to decide which type of gum I wanted, when I saw the gum. When I was little, my brother, my Syrian friend and I used to eat this gum and we loved it. I haven’t seen it in stores for a long time, so [...]

Saksay is one of my favorite deserts. Ever. It’s cold, delicious, and nostalgic. It’s also the source for a lot of silly jokes. Like a great friend of mine used to sing: “I’m to saksay for my saksay”. When I was younger my mom often made it whenever we’d have parties with our Syrian friends. Here’s the recipe [...]

I was watching So You Think You Can Dance (last season though, not the current one) on TV last night. One couple danced to Richard Marx’s Right Here Waiting. And that brought back a memory. I remember sitting in a small cafe in Damascus with my dad, working on my math for school. I was probably eight [...]

I haven’t posted anything in the past few days because internet has been slow. It seemed that everybody was on because of the Eid. It’s gotten back to its normal speed though so I’ll start blogging again. Hope you enjoyed the Eid,

A couple of months ago I posted the trailer for a film called “Amreeka”. Well, I just watched it last night and…I loved it. From the leopard print cardigan that the main character wore, to the cucumbers (great moment), every detail in the movie was done well. (I particularly liked the grandma.) To quote my mom: “Everyone should see [...]

Having a blog can be great. But it can also make you feel bad for not writing everyday. I have lots of ideas and keep planning to write, but end up busy with other things. I will try to write soon (and more consistently).

Brrr! It’s cold! It seems like winter is finally here. There are a lot of misconceptions about Syria (and the Middle East) and one of them is winter. A lot of people in the States (that I’ve talked to, at least) think Syria is all desert and always, always hot. Like in the Chronicles of [...]

I just saw this video a few hours ago on MTV Arabia. I really like it. I think it’s one of the best Arabic music videos I’ve ever seen. Not extremely corny with a guy singing something like “the color of the sky doesn’t please you, I’ll erase it and re-color it, stars fall, I’ll hang them [...]

I want to write a post: “A Comprehensive List of Reasons Why I Love The Middle East”. That will take me a long time because there are tons of reasons and I don’t want to leave anything out. So…when the list will actually appear on my blog is…well, probably not extremely soon. In the mean time, [...]

I really like some of the podcasts you can get on iTunes. These are all free ones I’ve been listening to recently:
History of Jazz (iTunes U) – Dr. Gordon Vernick’s, associate professor of music and coordinator of jazz studies at Georgia State University, laid-back yet still professional approach to jazz history sounds like you’re talking [...]
